I'm a somatic coach but what exactly does that mean?

In this episode I explore Somatics, including:

  • Somatics is the process of coming into tune with the living body, not just the mind. It helps us feel, move through emotions, heal trauma, and live life with purpose and joy. There are two main somatics lineages that Jaclyn brings together in her work - the neurobiological approach to understanding the nervous system and healing trauma, and the politicized somatics approach that examines systemic causes of trauma and uses somatics for social change.

  • Somatic practices help increase body awareness, calm the nervous system, and move stuck energy and emotions. Examples are somatic stress release, somatic experiencing, sensory motor psychotherapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

  • Somatics differs from mindfulness in that the goal is to connect with sensations, not detach from them. This is especially important for trauma healing.

  • Jaclyn has found somatics personally healing from anxiety, depression, pain and sexual trauma. She sees great potential for it to help others based on research and her experience.

Hi I'm Jaclyn (she/her) is a somatic coach, embodiment facilitator, science communicator, and health researcher. With a background in public health, trained in Somatic Stress Release and ten+ years of experience facilitating and conducting research I'm passionate about communicating the latest research into somatic practices that help you release stress, process trauma, and live life on purpose. I work one-on-one clients through somatic coaching, I facilitate a group program called Body Language Lab, and I teach workshops like this.
